Hi, I'm Rachael, mum of four children and various pets!

Today I've adopted a female roborovski hamster from the local pet shop as I've seen the poor wee girl in there for months and I wanted to give her a home.

She's like lightning and a very curious, outgoing girl, and I want to give her the best possible environment. At the moment she's in a spare temporary cage (she can't escape, it's suitable for a tiny hamster like her) but she really needs more floor space. I was wondering if anyone could recommend the perfect cage for an active robo hamster please?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to getting to know you all, Rachael

OK. Long rant coming up. Look away now if you don't like reading!

As you may or may not know, I will be rehoming a rescue soon, and I decided I would go to my local pet shop and see if I could get a few bits for him.

Local pet shops and all that, they need support. My first thing I noticed was they were keeping rabbits and guinea pigs together. That set bells ringing. I asked if they sold large wheels separately to the (very small) cages they had on sale. They said sadly, no, but we do have exercise balls. I explained that Scotty is a bit of a chunk so he needs a larger wheel. They replied, just put him in a ball, that'll keep his weight down! I don't think they quite understood.

Passing over this, we got onto discussion about hamsters. The man (I didn't like him from the off) told me that they would be getting some Roborovski Winter Whites in soon...I am no guru on dwarfs, but I do not think there is any such thing. He then explained how he doesn't like Syrians because they bite. I said, funny, mine never has...he shrugged this off by suggesting that mine must be one of a kind (what?) and went on to explain he likes dwarfs as children can chase them round the cage to handle them without them biting.

One, hamsters aren't really a children's pet, two, you shouldn't chase them if they don't want to be handled, and three, I'm sure the poor things would be bloody angry! I was. So I took my leave.

Sorry for the essay. I was fuming all the way to my local P@H, which is a very good branch by the way. A 4 mile round trip, walking, just to get away from that awful man. I came away with a lovely Savic wheel and house.

Ok, I am posting this in the dwarf hamster questions, but ultimately this is for all hamsters.

Flox is still with us, small and frail of an old man that he is, over 2 years old by a month now. He is still wanting to run in his silent spinner and loves being held by me still, but frail and old.

He has become very sensitive to wood chips, I have always used aspen, but bought some of the kaytee clean and cozy paper and all the hamsters love it.

Here is my question, what do you all use for your hammie cages/bins? I am looking at inexpensive ways (with good products mind you) to make my own paper bedding as it seems to be I can buy non chemical treated paper towels, I just like how the clean and cozy is finely shredded, and figuring out how to manage that myself.

Share your thoughts and ideas and what you use please?!

Name(s): Beatrice.
Neutered: Yes and vaccinated.
Reason for rehoming: Her previous owner had taken to a vets near to us and told the vet to put her down. Luckily, the very kind Vet nurse took her in and asked us to rehome her.
Will the group be split: She needs a home with a neutered male rabbit to keep her company.
Other: We would like to take this chance to say a huge thank you to Anwells Veterinary Surgery for taking her in, and also to Michelle the Vet nurse who contacted us as without them this girl wouldn't be here right now.

As requested by Ms Soosy, picures of my baby boys below

My eldest is Pepper, he's a Dutch Lemon Agouti and he's 6 years old. He's the mouth piece of the heard and shouts at me if I'm late with the veg for his tea.

Next up is Bubble who's a Tort and White Crested piggie and he's 5. Bubble is the biggest boy and he likes to rumble around the pen.

Ollie is a Chocolate Roan and he's 3 1/2. He's a lovely gentle boy who's very lazy and enjoys the quiet life.

Trevor is 9 months old and he's our Peruvian piggie. He's getting a hair cut once the weather warms up to stop him overheating in the summer.

We have two new additions to the clan who are both still in quarentine. We hope to start introducing them next week.

Oskar and Arthur are both Abysinian pigs between 8-12 months old. They are both still getting used to us but Arthur in particular is showing us some attitude already. Oskar I think will be another shouty pig.
